Top 10 Movies for 2010

2010 has 3 of the best films of the 2010s. 2010s? I mean all time. Really, 3 bangers, including #3 on my all time list. Yes it’s that good. Outside of those 3 there’s still lots of great stuff out there in a pretty deep year.

Honorable Mention:

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

127 Hours

Best Picture Winner, The King’s Speech.

Ok, now here’s 10 films that should have won instead:

10The Fighter
Mickey Ward’s tale brought to vibrant life by David O. Russell and Mark Wahlberg. Christian Bale, Amy Adams, and Melissa Leo are fantastic in this.

9Exit Through the Gift Shop
Trippy documentary that meanders through underground street art. The movie takes off when we (as close as possible) meet Banksy, and get a guide into his fascinating world.

8Flipped
Don’t be fooled by the Rotten Tomatoes score. This movie is about that innocent growth from childhood into adolescence, where the girl you hated might turn out to be the woman you like, and vice versa. Rob Reiner’s best film in years…

7Inside Job
The 2008 financial crisis affected the entire planet. This seething doc does a pretty great job explaining what the hell happened, and why you should be so pissed off about what the entire financial system did.

6Black Swan
Erotic horror ballet by Darren Aronofsky. The film boasts a strong anchor in Natalie Portman, and a movie star turn for Mila Kunis. Easily the hottest movie this year.

5Kick-Ass
Subversive superhero origin story mocking how hard becoming a superhero is. Chloe Grace Moretz is destined to be a star because of this film, and Nicholas Cage gives one of the weirdest fun performances of the year.

4How to Train Your Dragon
Animated delight about a boy and his pet dragon. The flying sequences are spectacular, and the human/pet friendship is as good as any committed to film. After watching this, I considered buying a pet: a monumental achievement. Sadly dragons were not available…

3Inception
Anyone can do a heist movie. Only Christopher Nolan can do a heist movie where what you’re stealing are dreams. This dazzling, inventive, spectacle boasts some of the most innovative scenes in the movies this year, or any year for that matter.

2The Social Network
Shakespearean study on the creation of Facebook. The David Fincher/Aaron Sorkin pairing is so potent it makes computer programming downright exciting, a basically impossible feat.

1Toy Story 3
What will end up being Pixar’s greatest film. The trilogy ends on thoughts of growing up, moving on, and true friendship. Not a dry eye will be left after watching this one, one of the great emotional journeys in cinematic history.
