Even though September is when Awards season kicks into high gear, that doesn’t mean there isn’t an end to all the fun movies. Below you’ll find the best popcorny releases for September and October this year.
It’s Will Smith 2019 vs. Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Will Smith. It’s also directed by the guy who gave us the tiger in a boat movie, using some of the better special effects in recent memory. If the plot can do something different when it comes to the sci-fi questions its raising, it has a chance to be something special.
Early buzz is propelling this movie into the Top 10. Indie Scream Queen Maika Monroe usually chooses interesting projects, and this one about dumb bad buys invading a house with a dark secret led to spectacular results with Don’t Breathe, so here’s me hoping lightning can strike twice.
Our favorite British castle stewards are back, in movie form. This time, the king and queen are coming to Downton, which I’m sure will inspire British versions of scandals and secrets. Tea will be had, beautiful wadrobes will be worn. Should deliver for its fans, and I think make a fun little drama.
The 4 leads are back from the 10 year old horror comedy. While everyone will be expecting a stellar cameo, the world this movie lives in is fascinating, and should be a great way to spend an evening since Jesse Eisenberg, Abagail Breslin, Woody Harrelson, and Emma Stone are super fun together.
The one hanging plot thread from one of the greatest TV Shows of all time gets a movie thanks to Netflix. Vince Gilligan, the Breaking Bad showrunner, is writing and directing this movie. If he’s proven anything with Bad and Better Call Saul, dude knows what he’s doing when it comes to drug running in New Mexico.
This movie has a stellar premise (Manhattan on lock down so a cop can try to stop cop killers from escaping in a short time window) and Chadwick Boseman, who usually picks interesting projects. Wakanda forever! At worst this should be hella fun.
The first film was one of the best films of 2017. Despite the mixed reviews of this one, the adult cast is really good, and the movie is probably going to be scary as hell. Red balloons will never be looked at the same again.
If you liked Hunt for the Wilderpeople or Thor: Ragnarok, this wild premise of a movie is directed by the same guy, Taika Waititi. This movie has the highest difficulty scale, but if Waititi’s irreverent humor and zany style pull off this Hitler satire, it’ll probably be one of the best movies of the year.
Pairing Joaquin Phoenix with the guy who directed The Hangover movies to make a movie about the Batman villian is already pretty wild. But, more interestingly, we’ll see if a superhero movie will succeed if it’s written like an arthouse film, which Joker clearly looks to be.
Jennifer Lopez almost got there with Second Act, turning her movie almost into an effective study of class struggles. This one takes the ideas from that film, and translate it to strippers who help scam Wall St. If done right, this could be a modern Dillinger/Robin Hood story.
