The month that usually starts the summer blockbuster season, May, finds itself potentially after the Endgame of all blockbuster season. So this may is more of a hodgepodge of things, with the strongest entries being in the comedy realm, and the return of badass Keanu Reeves.
Bringing in Millie Bobby Brown, Vera Farmiga, and Ken Watanabe among other stellar actors and actresses should make this monster vs. monster movie not only really fun, but also respectable.
Similar to Bohemian Rhapsody, this crowd pleaser will play Elton John’s greatest hits, but those hits are awesome, so this movie will at least be enjoyable, and potentially could be great.
Gotta catch em all, but in this case, the Pokemon are catching bad guys. Ryan Reynolds doing the voice of Pikachu is a good choice, and Pokemon in general are overdue for a modern live action film.
This is my obligatory foreign film to seek out. Yimou Zhang is one of the great Chinese filmmakers. ESPECIALLY when it comes to martial arts/battle epics, which this one is shaping up to be.
JRR Tolkien wrote the book that inspired my favorite movie of all time. Suffice to say, the man behind LOTR probably has a very interesting very British story…
Netflix is bringing out the comedy heavy hitters in this one: with the spectacular female writers/ actress of the early 2000s SNL seasons (Fey, Poehler, Gasteyer, Rudolph, Dratch, Pell, etc) drinking and partying with a glass of wine in hand.
Based on the great sci-fi books. Brad Pitt is starring, and James Gray is driecting. Gray famously recently did the criminally underseen and underrated Lost City of Z, and there’s a real shot this could be something special.
Seth Rogen upgrades hot blonde love interests from Katherine Heigl to Charlize Theron. This romcom looks like it could be really funny, but more piognant than people expect as well since the subject matter is a political campaign.
Blockers almost got there a year ago, but Olivia Wilde’s debut as a director has the buzziness of Superbad when that film came out. Meaning: this might be the high school movie for a new generation of kids. It’s even got Jonah Hill’s little sister in a starring role!
The first John Wick will go down as one of the great modern action films. The 2nd one, while not as good, is still hella entertaining. This third one looks like a non stop shoot em up, with crazy set pieces everyone will be talking about. Plus, Halle Berry is going full action hero. Um, hell yeah!
