Best of the 2014 TV Season

Here are my daily picks for the best TV shows from 2013 Summer to 2014 Spring, in case you want to catch up on something:

Monday

Sleepy Hollow: Best new show of the year. This show merges Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman, the American Revolution, and the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse into one loopy TV show. Tom Mison and Nicole Beharie are really good together, and the show moves so fast you’ll have a hard time catching up. It also boasts the best plot twist of the TV season.

Tuesday

Trophy Wife: One and done charmer starring Malin Akerman. Features one of the best casts on TV (Bradley Whitford and Marcia Gay Harden in particular) and the best trio of kids (Ryan Lee, Bailee Madison, and Albert Tsai). It will be missed.

Fargo: Horrifying mini-series with spectacular turns from Martin Freeman and especially Billy Bob Thornton.

Wednesday

The Americans: Best show of the year, amping up the tension and moral gray area from the first season. Matthew Rhys deserves an Emmy.

Thursday

Community: Dan Harmon’s victory lap season successfully ends the show before it got too tired. Greendale will be missed.

Weekend

Orange Is the New Black: A close second on the best TV show of the year, Netflix’s shining star has the most diverse cast on the planet and pushes the TV boundaries on exploration of female relationships, gender identity, and racial politics. Uzo Aduba is mesmerizing.

Sunday

Breaking Bad: One of the greatest dramas of any generation rides off into the sunset. Ozymandias is probably the best episode of television I saw this season.

Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey: Necessary pro-science study of our universe and the people determined to figure it out. Neil DeGrasse Tyson does Carl Sagan proudly.
