Movie Review: The Last Sunrise

Corporate synergies couldn’t be more perfect than Amazon Prime releasing The Last Sunrise. The film is built for you to swoon, hoping you’ll find your love on a beautiful beach vacation in Europe somewhere. And where are you gonna get that beach gear and new suitcase to look hot and ready for that dream? I’m amazed Samsonite and Tommy Hilfiger are not among the “if you liked The Last Sunrise, then” list alongside other romantasy movie recs. Missed opportunity, Bezos.

Ry Pera (Maia Reficco) should be thrilled for this Mallorca trip with her mom and real estate mogul Isolde (Eva Longoria). But, when you’re numbed by epilepsy medication that also prevents you from drinking, excitement, and pulsating lights, I’d probably be in the dumps too. With Isolde immersed in her job, Ry asks hotel clerk Amara (Chloe Sweetlove) where the best beach is to chill. Unaware this was a nude beach, Ry keeps to herself, until her mouth drops open when the 6’5 impossibly beautiful Julian (Fernando Lindez) Halle Berry’s ALL of himself right up to her. Gee, I wonder if this Spanish god will also be into a Texas dancer as beautiful as he is?

Mallorca does all the heavy lifting in The Last Sunrise. Filmed on location, the bar can only go so low when you’re mozying through this magical place completely out of time, surrounded by models who wear very little clothing. Not enjoying the very obvious beats of this film, with characters withholding information until the plot determines it so? I’m sorry I wasn’t listening, cause I was in the coolest cavernous club with beautiful people dancing everywhere. And tomorrow, we get to go boating on the sea, and in the most beautiful underground glow in a dark lagoon to make out with our Spanish boyfriend who looks like art jumped off the canvas. At least the script has some teasing fun with its overwrought nature, flirting with a couple ludicrous and one downright almost gross plot twist that frankly would have made me love the movie more. It chickens out to play it safe. But The Last Sunrise isn’t here to be bold. It’s here to look cool and hot, and hope you feel that way watching it. Every new drone shot of another gorgeous place on Mallorca makes me sadder I didn’t visit it or Ibiza when I was younger.

Maybe I should fake epilepsy to see if my Spanish goddess will come walking up to me on a nude beach. If that’s the energy you want for a couple hours, The Last Sunrise is here for you to take deep longing breaths as you chill on your couch and glance at your phone when everyone’s wearing clothes or talking again. And Eva Longoria, make this your thing! Just go to new countries playing a mom to a sad heartbroken daughter who needs love to feel whole again. Worst case, we all get a helluva vacation out of it.
