Summer movie season starts in April…but not likely this year. It’s a really weird movie slate, with a return of the Netflix romcom, a couple horror movies, a historical drama, and as expected, 3 superhero movies, including the one where the world’s greatest movie franchise officially changes guard from one Disney franchise to another.
Honorable Mentions:
After (a real shot for one of the stupidest movies of the year)
Now onto the ten top April 2019 films to look out for:
10 | The Best of Enemies |
Your standard historical drama about overcoming racism which should feature great performances from Sam Rockwell and Taraji P. Henson. |
9 | Unicorn Store |
Captain Marvel herself, Brie Larson, takes lessons from life putting herself again with Samuel L. Jackson. Literally in fact: it’s her first directorial debut. Available on Netflix. |
8 | The Man Who Killed Don Quixote |
It’s taken decades for Terry Gilliam to get this movie made. Gilliam’s films are at least interesting, so if he’s that invested in the story of the idiotic windmill fighter of Spanish lore, then there’s gonna be something worthwhile in there. |
7 | The Perfect Date |
Netflix not only revived the romcom last year, but it created a superstar in heartthrob Noah Centineo. He’s got a new Netflix release with this one about a boy who gets inspired by a girl to be arm candy for dollars. He’s the new Julia Roberts! |
6 | Under the Silver Lake |
The reviews aren’t that good for this one, but the director is David Robert Mitchell, who’s last film, It Follows, was so good that I need to give this one at least a shot. |
5 | Teen Spirit |
From one of the kids in The Social Network comes a movie about becoming a star in a singing competition. The visual style of this movie is very interesting, here’s hoping the story itself is also fun, even without Lady Gaga. |
4 | Pet Sematary |
Early buzz is strong, and Stephen King adaptation is great, and the cast is really good with John Lithgow, Amy Seimetz, and Jason Clarke prepared to scare us as they make the mistake of going into a misspelled cemetery for dead pets. Creepy already. |
3 | Shazam! |
DC is leagues behind Marvel, but thanks to hunky Jason Momoa, they’re no longer the serious comic book franchise. Shazam! should continue that trend, turning a teenager into a superhero who has no idea what his powers are. |
2 | High Life |
A space horror movie directed by the great French director Claire Denis and starring ascendant interesting actor, Robert Pattinson. This movie should be a character study in space, with all sorts of fun but provocative twists and turns aplenty. |
1 | Avengers: Endgame |
After the snap felt by half the universe, Marvel ends a chapter of one of the great runs of blockbuster movies in cinematic history. Endgame is going to be long, but if it’s as good as I think it is going to be, we might be looking at The Dark Knight’s first real challenger for best superhero movie of all time. |
