2015 Summer Movie Preview: June

While May had the heavyweights, June has more of the family fare, including a Pixar Movie, a John Green adaptation, and dinosaurs:

Entourage

ENTOURAGE

The Good: Jeremy Piven in the role he was born to play, the whole cast is back, writer/director are from the TV Show

The Bad: Adrian Grenier is a crappy lead, over reliance on fan service

Prediction:

This movie is for Mark Wahlberg and anyone who is a fan of the series. I doubt if you have no affection for the show, you should see this movie. In addition, these people think the show is better than it actually is.

 BOO

B.O.O: BUREAU OF OTHERWORLDY OPERATIONS

The Good: DreamWorks is usually solid in the kids entertainment department, voice cast is filled with funny people, okay premise

The Bad: Untested director

Prediction:

Great start of summer movie for kids, but parents will be supremely bored. Expect colors and fart jokes.

Jurassic World

JURASSIC WORLD

The Good: Solid smart sci-fi director Colin Trevorrow, Chris Pratt is a star (lord), strong supporting cast, juicy source material, dinosaurs

The Bad: uncalled for reboot, indie romance/untested big budget director Colin Trevorrow

Prediction:

Trevorrow’s Safety Not Guaranteed was a smart character based sci-fi film, so I have faith in him rebooting a classic film. Plus Chris Pratt and dinosaurs? Good combination.

Inside Out

INSIDE OUT

The Good: Pete Docter directed Up and Monsters, Inc., an original Pixar inventive premise, strong CGI

The Bad: recent so-so Pixar movie streak

Prediction:

Pixar’s most recent films suffered from either sequel fatigue or a so-so premise. When they have to create new worlds, they usually shine, as I think they will here.

Paper Towns

PAPER TOWNS

The Good: John Green book adaptation, strong YA script writer, Nat Wolff

The Bad: A mostly untested cast, unknown director, tired premise

Prediction:

John Green writes smart books that strike chords with teenagers. While this one lacks the star power of Fault In Our Stars, it will still be a solid weepy film for teenagers to explore feelings.

Transporter Legacy

THE TRANSPORTER LEGACY

The Good: Luc Besson usually is involved in fun action movies

The Bad: Faceless cast, quick cutting disorientation, mediocre/sub par director, multiple writers

Prediction:

Culty at best, pointless waste of money is a more likely scenario.

Ted 2

TED 2

The Good: Mark Wahlberg’s comic chops, Liam Neeson and Morgan Freeman

The Bad: Reeks of cash grab, Seth MacFarlane gets old real fast, no Mila Kunis

Prediction:

Will be mysogynistically funny, but grow old very quickly. Never a good sign when a sequel is greenlit before an idea exists.

Ricki and the Flash

RICKI AND THE FLASH

The Good: Meryl Streep, Diabolo Cody, Jonathan Demme,

The Bad: Similar movie premise already done this year, mostly untested or over the hill supporting players

Prediction:

Meryl Streep will raise some eyebrows, but the premise is pretty crappy. Also, Diabolo Cody and Jonathan Demme as a pair doesn’t quite make sense for this subject matter.

MUST SEEInside Out. Pixar’s worst is usually pretty solid, and I expect this one to get them back on track.

MUST SKIPEntourage. Self-importance reeks from the show and its creators; is it really fun to watch famous pretty people congratulate themselves for over 90 minutes?

MOST INTRIGUINGJurassic World. Dinosaurs are spectacular to look at, and if any of the weighty source material makes it in, we could be looking at something really special.
