2017 Warm Weather Movie Preview: May

May is much more hopeful than April, with that rag tag group of Marvel miscreants leading the charge…

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL 2

The Good: The first was insanely fun, and each new trailer makes me more excited to see what everyone does this go around. One of Marvel’s most enjoyable properties.

The Bad: It’s possible Marvel can get too hands on with this property since there are over 8 credited writers.

Prediction:

Long live Baby Groot and Rocket!!!!

KING ARTHUR: LEGEND OF THE SWORD

The Good: A Shakespearean take on a known legend by a very creative director with a good cast.

The Bad: Like all Guy Ritchie movies, could this one lose its emotional impact in favor of excessive visual flair?

Prediction:

Ritchie made Sherlock Holmes pretty fun, hopefully he can do the same for King Arthur.

SNATCHED

The Good: Excited to see the Amy Schumer/Goldie Hawn pairing, plus a relatively strong writer and director.

The Bad: The non R-Rated trailer inspires bland garbage; hopefully the R rating leads to more than just sex jokes.

Prediction:

I’ll laugh, but it feels sorta forgettable.

ALIEN: COVENANT

The Good: Ridley Scott is usually better when he directs sci-fi, and the cast is pretty stellar.

The Bad: A crew lands on a planet and finds an abandoned spaceship with terrifying creatures that take over their own ship. Plus there’s a badass female heroine? IT’S THE SAME PLOT AS THE ORIGINAL!!!

Prediction:

There will be scares, but red flags abound everywhere on this one.

BAYWATCH

The Good: The leads are all pretty hot.

The Bad: The director is involved in lots of crap, and there are 6 writers attached.

Prediction:

You don’t see Baywatch for the story anyway; as long as everyone is insanely good looking, this will be passable I imagine.

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES

The Good: This is Johnny Depp’s best character, and Javier Bardem might make this fun.

The Bad: Meta Thus continues a series that had one idea for its first film and has been making up nonsense since. The “story by” for this movie is from a guy that wrote several awful sequels.

Prediction:

Thus continues the downfall of Johnathan Depp, esquire.

WAR MACHINE

The Good: A good writer/director with juicy material coupled with Brad Pitt back in uniform.

The Bad: Michod’s other stuff is more dramatic, can he write effective satire?

Prediction:

I have high hopes for this Netflix feature, should be biting and mean.

MUST SEE: Those fun loving Guardians of the Galaxy, and whatever wacky hi jinks they get themselves into.

MUST SKIPAlien: The Reboot (Covenant). I think Ridley Scott might have forgotten he made this movie 38 years ago.

MOST INTRIGUING: I wanna see if Netflix can make War Machine as cutting as it should be.
