We get it Sofia Coppola, we get it. You were lucky enough to be good friends with Marc Jacobs, going to the coolest fashion shows in the world during the 1990s, AND you’re dad passed onto you the gift of incredible moviemaking. That being said, I’m glad you used that gift to mostly highlight your gifted friend, and make us understand why we should all think your friend is the greatest. Friends lift up other friends!
Marc By Sofia (ok, that title is dope) lets Coppola dive at least a little deeper into the Marc Jacobs lore. As we prepare for his fall/winter 2024 show, Sofia gives us the Marc Jacobs history lesson you will never learn in US history until college maybe. From student prodigy, to trailblazing street designer, to fashion superstar, we get his origin story, and maybe a little bit extra with a dose of Sofia’s questions as well.
Having Sofia Coppola direct your documentary elevates it above standard doc fare. Using the framing device of prepping for his latest show, Marc By Sofia allows the director to give us clear start and end points, while interspersing context where necessary, treating the audience like an amnesiac main character. This approach allows us to view Marc Jacobs in the thick of his job, showing us why he’s special instead of just telling us with non Marc voiceover. The magic trick Coppola pulls is explaining with the flashbacks why Marc is so talented to untalented uninteresting fashion wearers like myself. Through clever editing, we see Marc’s ideas and musings about his latest show auto cut to some specific pop culture/world moment where that inspiration came from, then cutting back to the present to see that idea manifest in the outfits. And with the little extra time she has Sofia gives us Marc’s history like he’s a movie character, filling in the bullet points for us which reinforce and back up the rest of her documentary.
So, to all of my friends, the bar has been raised! Anyone out there want to make a documentary about me to show off how much of a genius I am. Anyone? What’s that? I’ve overplayed my hand here? Got it, my bad.
