Pete’s Picks for the Top 10 Movies of the Prestige Movie Season

With the changing tree colors comes movie mania! Here are my suggestions for the 10 most interesting films to see this fall.

Honorable mentions: Thor: Ragnarok, Lady Bird, Justice League, Murder on the Orient Express.

10 Pitch Perfect 3 Only a deeply cynical person would not have a good time at either the amazing original or the pretty funny sequel. Doesn’t matter that I have no idea where the story is going, or if the story has lost steam, an hour and a half with the Bellas is a great way to perk you up if you’re having a bad day.

9 Downsizing For the life of me, Alexander Payne is the oil to my water. People LOVE his stuff, and I just don’t get it. However, I understand the talent, and maybe this cool premise will make me a believer.
8 I, Tonya For those to young to remember, the Nancy Kerrigan/Tonya Harding incident was one of the most insane things that happened pre-internet in the 90s (only topped by OJ and JonBenet Ramsey). Margot Robbie is gonna Charlize her way into Oscar contention, and the movie’s gonna be darkly funny. Just watch this meme generating clip below:
7 Last Flag Flying I’ve made no secret of my love for Richard Linklater. Don’t believe me? Read This. Or this. Given a bigger budget and really talented actors (not his strongest suit, admittedly), I’m excited to see what he can do with this melancholy story of a veteran burying his son…
6 The Shape of Water Guillermo del Toro was one of those fun mediocre sci-fi directors, that is, until I saw Pan’s Labyrinth, a near masterpiece that will bring you to tears. Early buzz on this film is del Toro has reached those amazing heights again with this mismatched story of intergalactic connection.
5 Coco Pixar sequels (with a Toy Story exception) have been crappy affairs. Their original stuff is usually something special, and Coco looks to continue that trend. Directed by the Toy Story 3 director and set in the Land of the Dead, at worst this movie will look amazing, and at best it can be transcendent like the rest of Pixar’s masterpieces.
4 The Disaster Artist The Room is one of the 5 worst movies ever made. Tommy Wiseau, the creative force behind the clusterf***, is so creepily inhuman and weird that it’s fitting James Franco would be fascinated to direct and play this guy for darkly comedic effect. In hopes you see The Room before this film, I put the best scene below so you can see how bad it is…
3 3 Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri In Bruges put Martin McDonagh’s name on the map. Seven Psychopaths proved he wasn’t a fluke. And now this Francis McDormand starring film looks to put him among the Hollywood directing elite. The buzz on this thing is sky high, with words like “career best” and “towering achievement” being used. Can’t wait.
2 Blade Runner 2049 While I wasn’t paying attention, Denis Villeneuve has become a director for whom I can’t wait for his next release. Prisoners. Sicario. And last year’s masterpiece Arrival. A sequel to Blade Runner seemed like a TERRIBLE idea until he got attached, and all the buzz is that this film not only reaches but just might top the original. Bravo!
1 Star Wars: The Last Jedi No other film was ever going to top this one, but not just because it is a Star Wars movie. The Director’s, Rian Johnson, last 2 projects were Breaking Bad’s best episode and the fantastic Looper. With all the bad buzz Disney has had over the other Star Wars projects, nothing is being said about this one, which can only mean they are super happy with this one. There’s a real chance that this one hits the series’s high point of Empire Strikes Back and surpasses it!
