Trick or Treat! The 10 Most Anticipated Movies Coming Out In October 2018

The Prestige Movie Season starts in earnest in October. That means lots of really great movies are gonna be coming out the next 3 months. October is a mix of horror movies and some very anticipated Oscar Bait.

Honorable Mention:

Beautiful Boy

In reverse order:

10 Can You Ever Forgive Me? Melissa McCarthy plays Lee Israel, an author who started forging old letters to pay the bills. This looks like arthouse fare, but a strong dramatic turn from McCarthy, to add more complexity to her acting resume.
9 Suspiria A remake of a classic horror film by the Call Me By Your Name director. It should be at least pulpy fun, even if the reviews are merely ok…
8 Halloween The reboot of the Michael Meyers franchise brings back Jamie Lee Curtis, to hopefully really scary fun effect, at least the early reviews deem it so…
7 Venom Tom Hardy donning a bonkers Spiderman Villain character by the Zombieland guy? If this were an R rated movie, it would be higher, but it’s still got my head scratchin wondering what to make of this one….
6 The Hate U Give Reviews are really good so far for this story about police violence on a young African-American. I don’t doubt the power of this movie-based-on-a-book. I only worry it will be too on the nose, like the title “discreetly” hiding its acronym.
5 Serenity This sexy mystery thriller with Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway sounds like its gonna be really fun. Why? Because the guy who put Tom Hardy in a car talking as a whole movie is directing this one too.
4 Mid90s Jonah Hill’s directorial debut about skateboarders in California. Hill perpetually wants to be taken seriously, so we’ll see how much effort he puts in to make this movie as impressive as he hopes he is to everyone.
3 A Star Is Born Another debut director, Bradley Cooper, except this story has been told a few times before. The early reviews are great, and I’m most excited to see how no-makeup Lady Gaga is as the star. Early buzz is she’s Oscar worthy…
2 Bad Times at the El Royale A stellar cast with a killer premise (7 strangers with secrets end up at a hotel where the secrets come out, love it). And running the puppet show is Drew Goddard, who’s last puppet show was this generation’s Scream
1 First Man La La Land‘s Damien Chazelle and Ryan Gosling trade Emma Stone and Los Angeles for Claire Foy and The Moon, telling the story of Neil Armstrong’s journey into history. Chazelle is as gifted a filmmaker as they come, so I expect big things from this one…
