2016 Summer Movie Preview: July

Not gonna lie, July’s lineup is pretty awful this year:

The BFG

THE BFG

The Good: Steven Spielberg, y’all!

The Bad: The director hasn’t done a kids movie since the Adventures of Tintin; I know, I don’t remember either

Prediction:

It’s gonna look great, that’s for sure.

 The Purge Election Year

THE PURGE: ELECTION YEAR

The Good: Taking the good horror movie premise and building it around Trumpmania.

The Bad: At some point, these movies will become tired.

Prediction:

My gut says this will be the high point for the Purge franchise, twisting the wicked premise around a campaign allegory, maybe?

The Legend of Tarzan

THE LEGEND OF TARZAN

The Good: David Yates can handle big films, like 4 Harry Potters.

The Bad: We already had one lost human in the jungle this year, and it’s hard to make two of those different enough.

Prediction:

Some cool action, but warning signs abound here.

The Secret Life of Pets

THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS

The Good: Toy Story’s premise around adorable CGI animals.

The Bad: It could be too geared for the lowest common denominator to suit children.

Prediction:

The Minions studio will know how to get this done right.

Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates

MIKE AND DAVE NEED WEDDING DATES

The Good: Anna Kendrick and Aubrey Plaza going crazy as a gender inversion.

The Bad: Untested director and relatively unknown writers.

Prediction:

There may be a few good sight gags, but Zac Efron hasn’t proven he can win over comedies without Seth Rogen.

Ghostbusters

GHOSTBUSTERS

The Good: 4 very funny women and a director who knows how to get the most out of all of them.

The Bad: Do they really have to do the first Ghostbusters again?

Prediction:

The more I see of this one, the less excited I get, although I really am excited to see Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones on the big screen.

Star Trek Beyond

STAR TREK BEYOND

The Good: Justin Lin is an awesome action movie director.

The Bad: At this point, what is the difference between Star Wars and Star Trek

Prediction:

A competently made space thriller, but nothing more is my guess. The action is going to deliver though.

Jason Bourne

JASON BOURNE

The Good: Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass are back together.

The Bad: Is there really any more material left to cover with this Bourne?

Prediction:

These guys wouldn’t come back unless the story is that interesting, or the $$$ are that good; here’s to hoping for the former.

Bad Moms

BAD MOMS

The Good: I like the 3 leads a lot: Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, and Kathryn Hahn.

The Bad: Nothing like a movie about women written by crappy guy writers/directors.

Prediction:

I think this is gonna be Bad Teacher with 3 women instead of Cameron Diaz.

MUST SEE: The Secret Life of Pets. Illumination Animation at worst makes fun family movies, and I have a feeling this one could be one of their better efforts.

MUST SKIP: Bad Moms. Let’s stop men writing movies about women Hollywood, shall we?

MOST INTRIGUING: You know it’s a bad month when a Purge movie falls in this category.
